The Roman Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the Seven Wonders of the World! As a matter of fact, the Colosseum is one of the most visited sites in Italy. It is the largest colosseum ever built in the world, built between 70-80 AD. It held 50,000-80,000 spectators during their gladiator contests and other events. Have you ever wondered what it was like to watch a gladiator match? I have. The Colosseum remains a symbol of Imperial Rome. Although damaged extensively by an earthquake in 1349, which left it in ruin, it is still a reminder of Ancient Roman civilization.

Vatican City

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, and covers just over 100 acres, making it one-eighth the size of New York’s Central Park. The Vatican is governed as an absolute monarchy with the pope at its head. The Vatican mints its own euros, prints its own stamps, issues passports and license plates, operates media outlets and has its own flag and anthem. In fact, in 2019 there are 799 residents living in the Vatican, including Italians, Swiss, and Argentinians, among others. These residents work in the city and in some cases their family members live there as well. Papal approval is required to become a citizen of Vatican City.

Papal Residence

Until 1377, Popes did not actually live in the Vatican. Over the years it fell into disrepair, therefore, much work was required to make it suitable for a papal residence. Pope Francis began his Papacy in March 2013, and resides in the Vatican. He is the first pope from the Americas, and is actually the first from outside Europe. Born in Argentina in 1936, he is noted for his humility and concern for the poor.

Swiss Guard

The Swiss Guard, recognizable by its colorful Renaissance-era uniforms, has been protecting the pontiff since 1506. The Swiss Guard’s role in Vatican City is strictly to protect the safety of the pope. Although the world’s smallest standing army appears to be strictly ceremonial, its soldiers are extensively trained and highly skilled marksmen. While watching these guards, I had the amazing experience of watching the “changing of the guards.”

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica

In A.D. 64, a great fire leveled much of Rome. The Emperor Nero accused the Christians of starting the blaze, and had them executed in unspeakable ways. Among those Christians executed was the apostle Peter. Also, it is believed that he was buried in a shallow grave on Vatican Hill. In the fourth century, Constantine began construction of the original basilica atop the ancient burial ground of those early Christians, including St. Peter. Above all, lying in the center of the Vatican, it is full of magnificent artwork, art glass, sculptures and artifacts.

Sistine Chapel

One of Italy Historical Treasures, the Sistine Chapel is located inside the Vatican. This ancient structure, which was restored between 1473 and 1481, is considered a wonder of the Renaissance. Undoubtedly, it is one of the greatest treasures of Rome and the world. Commissioned to paint the ceiling, Michelangelo took 4 years to complete this masterpiece. These magnificent works of art still stand today as an example of truly great talent. In fact, considered one of the top works in the history of art, they continue to attract visitors and art critics from around the world.

Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is also the seat of the conclave, in which the cardinals elect a new pope.

You will undoubtedly agree with me that Italian Historical Treasures are unforgettable and something definitely worth visiting. And, if your interest is history, you will definitely benefit from learning more about these remarkable treasures. Above all, I hope you will learn more about the historical treasures in Italy.
